"Impostor," it revolves around the idea of Racial Impostor Syndrome, or the feeling that multi-racial people experience when they cannot claim a single racial identity. With a "hybrid" racial makeup, mixed race people often feel as if they are "not enough" or do not fully belong to any one group. This can create a kind of identity crisis. I plan to create portraits and conduct interviews that explore these experiences and help to render people of mixed race visible. I aim to produce striking portraits using simple lighting and a shallow depth of field to convey a sense of searching and discovery. My aim is not to showcase my subjects as "specimens" or "outcasts." These are people, with real stories to tell and complicated relationships to multiple parts of their identity. My project explores questions about this relationship, foregrounding the ambivalent position of mixed race Americans within a racially segregated and ordered society.
